Musique Concrète.

Musique Concrète (concrete music) is where ‘Sound Art’ originated from. It is a form of electroacoustic music which is made from acousmatic sound (a sound one hears without seeing were it originated from), as well as other sounds from our surrounding environment such as: our bodies and voices, musical instruments or ‘noise-makers’ and other such electronic devices which have been manipulated by chopping and changing their original arrangement to create something that is not to the normal musical rules, giving the ability of the artist to create something wacky and unexpected.

Pierre Schaeffer is today known as the ‘Father of Musique Concrète / Sound Art’ as his experimental career (postwar) made sound manipulation into a practicing art form in our society today. Schaeffer was never trained as a musician or composer but instead worked as a radio engineer, it was not till he founded the RTF electronic studio in 1944 that he began his first experiments with October 1948 giving him his first big exposure, when he broadcasted his first public piece. His tapes, in due course altered the interpretation and perception of what music was and could be, which saw a movement into a new genre of music other than the norm of the time.
